Sam Russo is a neglected graduate of the Staten Island Home for
Children. Russo's not long back
from World
War II where his unit fought on the Pacific Front with the
very last
of America's cavalry troops. Holding on to the rest of New
York City by
a ferryboat, Staten Island is not the kind of place for a
real Private
Eye. But Sam's a dreamer with the gift of gab. He's a young
sleuth
who'd like to follow in the hard-boiled footsteps of
Bogart's Philip
Marlowe or Bogart's Sam Spadeāif only he was
hard-boiled. Even so,
sleuthing has brought him three good things: a yodeling dog
named
Jane, an upper crust sassy dame called Mrs. Willingford, and
some
tough spots where it's do or die.

|
1948. Sam Russo, self-named and self-styled, would follow in
the hard-boiled footsteps of Sam Spade, if he was
hard-boiled. Up to his hocks in the murders of three young
jockeys with both local cops and the track turning a blind
eye, Sam is a closer. He's coming home if it kills him. Race
horses, a gorgeous sassy dame, the Season at Saratoga, what
more could a PI want?
To survive it.

CASE 2
|
|
|
Sam Russo's first case brought him two good things: Jane, a
yodeling dog, and Mrs. Willingford, a rich and sassy dame.
Now back home in his crummy Staten Island room, all he wants
is to relax, read books, and go to the movies. Fat chance.
One knock on the door and he and Jane are careening down
Broadway, in and out of one hit show after another, in hot
pursuit of a giant killer.

Holly lives in the shabby room next to Sam's. She's a man.
He's a woman. Sam doesn't care. He likes Holly. His dog Jane
likes Holly. Life is fine until a Lagonda rolls through
Stapleton. Getting into that car, Holly's just turned the
worst trick of her life. When Holly disappears, Russo and
Jane find themselves lost in a sordid world of hidden
mansions, a twisted social club, and high society secrets.

CASE 4
|
|
|
Sam Russo's been shot, sapped, and slapped around. Jane's
had it worse. Time to lie low.
So what happens? Mrs. Willingford, who else? Sam and Jane
and Holly are sailing on the Willingford yacht whether Sam
likes it or not. What Mrs. Willingford wants, Mrs.
Willingford gets. What Mrs. Willingford doesn't want is a
starlet taking a high dive off her yacht, a body stuffed in
a closet, and Jane gone missing far from land.
